The use of Web 2.0: An analytical study on the uses of Twitter in sports events

Abstract

Social media have created a completely new reality on the level communicator, applications, audiences and impacts, which requires re-examining the research and analytical methods used to examine the communication process. This study aims to identify the role of twitter in covering sports events taking the news of Al-Ahly first-time winning the CAF confederation cup on the 6th of December 2014 as a case study. This study is quantitative study in which the researcher used survey method to analyse all tweets [n=250] found on the Arabic hashtag #ﺍﻷﻫﻠﻲ_ﺑﻁﻝ _ﺍﻟﻛﻭﻧﻔﺩﺭﺍﻟﻳﺔ [AlAhly_champion_confederation] between the 6th and 10th of December 2014. The showed that most of tweets came from accounts that belong to ordinary individuals compared to accounts that belong to news websites. It also showed that more than 50% of the tweets were not liked or retweeted. Only the tweets that belong to public figures and famous news websites got large numbers likes and retweets.
