Abstract

The research problem was identified in revealing the extent of the Egyptian public's dependence on the official accounts of news agencies on social media sites (Facebook and Twitter) and their request for information they provide about current events through those sites, the strategies it follows in this regard, and the motives and effects of their reliance on news agency accounts as a source of information seeking in light of the use of theories of information seeking and reliance on the media. A number are referred to as determinants that give importance to this study, as follows: 1- The central role played by social networking sites, specifically Facebook and Twitter, in providing the masses with information and news, and thus the ability to form opinions; 2- The privacy of the accounts of news agencies on social media, as it is considered a meeting place for individuals from multiple societies and countries with diverse customs, ideologies, customs and traditions, and thus different objective and news interests. 3- The tendency of news agencies to address the public of ordinary individuals, by creating websites for them, then accounts on social media sites of their own, and therefore there is a need to discover the characteristics of this audience and their interests, and the extent of their dependence on these accounts when seeking information.
