Abstract

The study problem crystallized by observing the extent of university youth’s interest in following the events of the 2018 World Cup, as it is one of the major international sports tournaments that are held every four years, and this tournament is unique this year, especially for the Egyptian people. For the first time, the Egyptian national football team participated after an absence of 28 years, as it was the last participant in the 1990 World Cup. And restricting matches to satellite channels with a subscription may make university youth look for other free media that allow them to follow match events easily and in a free way without paying any special participation in social media competing in showing live broadcasts of World Cup matches and publishing World Cup events moment by moment as they occur. Thus, it may represent an important source of sports information. And to determine the problem in a scientific manner, an exploratory study was conducted In order to know the extent of university youth exposure to social networks and their interest in following the events of the 2018 World Cup, where the opinions of (40) individual university youths were surveyed, and the results were as follows:
- 100 % of the survey sample are exposed to social networks.
- 100 % of the survey sample are interested in following the events of the 2018 World Cup.
-90 % of the survey sample are interested in following the events of the 2018 World Cup through social media.
Hence, the problem of the study is to identify the role of social media networks in providing university youth with sports information about the 2018 World Cup events.
