Egyptian youth use of entertainment digital media platforms And its effects

Abstract

This study aims to examine the Egyptian youth use of digital media platforms which offer entertainment services. It is a descriptive study. It uses the survey method and the questionnaire tool applying to a sample of 400 respondents (211) females and (189) males of the Egyptian youth aged between 18- 35 years. The study is based on the diffusion of innovations theory.
Results of the study:

The digital media platforms which offer entertainment services are heavily used by the Egyptian youth; the respondents use these platforms permanently by (53%), sometimes by (29.5%), while (17.5%) of them don't use these platforms. 
The causes of this heavy use are to be found in broadcasting an integrated and exclusive content (movies, series and programs) in multiple languages, the quality of service provided to clients, the control over what is broadcast and when, in addition to the opportunity cost.
The Egyptian youth use of the digital media platforms which offer entertainment services affects their use of television. This is due to the advantages of these platforms.
The Egyptian youth use of the digital media platforms which offer entertainment services has many favorable effects on their life; these platforms allow them to learn about other cultures, foster a culture of diversity, and accept the other as an essential part of society. At the same time, this has negative impacts in some areas, determined in broadcasting content contrary to the society values and the Islamic religious teachings.
