Abstract

There has been an increasing scholarly interest in examining the relationship between violent media content and violent behaviours among the audience members. Despite the differences in research findings about the degree of negative impact produced by violent content, no researcher has ever denied the potential of spreading violent behaviours among audience. This study attempts to analyse the impact of thriller and manipulative TV shows, which are yet to receive adequate research attention though they contain lots of violent scenes. The study used the survey method to collect information from stratified random sample of 300 respondents, whose age range between 18 and 35 and who live in Cairo, Alexandria and Al-Minya. The research showed that thriller and manipulative TV showed formulated violent attitudes among sampled respondents of Egyptian youth. Most respondents indicated that they watch these programs to entertain themselves and pass time. The study also showed that Egyptian youth watch thriller programs to distract themselves from their own problems without paying any concern to violent scenes broadcasted in these TV shows.
