The role of mass media in increasing public interest in environmental issues among the Egyptian audience.

Abstract

The public awareness of environmental issues increases when mass media shed light on them. This increased awareness should translate into increased interest of environmental issues in everyday conversations as a response to media campaigns. This study uses media dependency theory to analyse the degree of public interest in following environmental issues on mass media. It attempts to examine the degree of importance public attach to environmental problems in Egypt. The study is quantitative research that rely on a survey method. Questionnaires were distributed among a purposive sample of 400 respondents from Cairo and Giza. The study showed a very limited interest among respondents in following media coverage of environmental problems. Nile pollution was ranked the first and most important environmental problem facing Egypt followed by rubbish in the streets according to the sampled respondents. The study also showed a significant relationship between following environmental issues on mass media and informative drives on using mass media.
