The dependency of Egyptian and Saudi university students on mass media during crises: A case study of Operation Decisive Storm in Yemen

Abstract

The informative of role of mass media becomes prominent during the times of crises and conflicts. Mass media can construct images and impressions about the different actors in crisis, legitimizing some and delegitimizing others. Members of the public increasingly rely on mass media during these difficult times to create stable meanings of events and find suitable interpretations for them. Mass media can help face crises, reduce causalities, reassure national and international publics and combat rumours. This study uses media dependency theory to analyse the degree to which Egyptian and Saudi youth depend on mass media during Decisive Storm Operation in Yemen. It is a quantitative study that uses survey method to collect information from a sample of 400 respondents using questionnaires. The study showed that social media were the most used source of news about Yemen among Egyptian youth compared to TV channels which were the most used source of news among Saudi youth.
