Abstract

By looking at existing academic literature, it has become evident that young people have increased dependence on social media (especially Facebook and Twitter) to obtain news, with a dearth of media studies dealing with measuring the credibility of these sites, which necessitates studying the issue of credibility of these sites in order to reach determinants and criteria that make up this credibility, in addition to an identification of its different dimensions and the multiple variables that overlap with it. As the credibility of the media in general and social network sites in particular is a complex variable with multiple dimensions, that contains a number of sub-variables, the problem crystallizes in studying the credibility of social network sites through two levels: The Macro Level: which includes the general endorsement of social media by young people and their evaluation of them in light of credibility standards and levels available therein, and the variables and elements that interfere in determining this credibility, namely: the demographic variables of the audience that include: gender and university ownership. - Micro Level: which includes a comparison between these sites and each other according to what was tested in the first level, in order to get to know the relationship between the degrees of dependence on social network sites and their perceptions of credibility and the confidence granted to them.
