Abstract

The study seeks to identify the attitudes of the media elite towards the social responsibility of the Egyptian digital media, in countering media misinformation on the Egyptian regional and international role in supporting the Palestinian cause against Israeli aggression October 2023, and the researcher relied on the qualitative method by applying to a purposive sample of 20 academics specializing in digital media, digital media diploma lecturers and practitioners studying the diploma, the "in-depth interview" tool and digital ethnographic observation, from March to June 2024, using the social responsibility theory
Main findings
-The elite agreed on the use of artificial intelligence in blocking information through social media, to control the posts of individuals and organizations about the aggression on Gaza
-The elite agreed on the social responsibility of the media and individuals in confronting double misinformation, the first related to the aggression on Gaza, and the second on Egypt's role in supporting the Palestinian cause
-The majority of the elite agreed that the most used strategy in the first disinformation is bias in both content ("separating what happened on October 7 from the background of the events"), and form through ("fabricating photos and videos"), some with artificial intelligence, in addition to disinformation by fearing Hamas
-The majority of the elite agreed that the most common strategy used in the second misinformation is bias in both content ("obscuring Egypt's positive role") and form (using old photos out of context)
-The elite agreed on the social responsibility of the Egyptian media in exposing misinformation about Egypt's support for the Palestinian cause, through live broadcasts of news channels, broadcasting the speech of UN officials, publishing the president's speeches at various conferences and meetings, and live meetings with Egyptian truck drivers in front of the crossing
-The elite agreed on the goals of the digital disinformation campaigns against Egypt, and the most important external disinformation goals were "questioning Egypt's position towards the Palestinian issue and embarrassing it internationally," to influence its image, listening to its proposals and supporting its steps towards the Palestinian issue, spreading peace and maintaining international security
-The elite agreed that social media supported Egypt's international role in spreading peace, its regional role in ceasefires and negotiations, and its humanitarian assistance to the people of Gaza
