Abstract

The study aimed to identify, describe and analyze the nature of the impact of social media content on university students' adoption of critical thinking skills, by relying on the uses and gratifications theory, the media dependency theory, and the audience interaction model via social media, and by applying an electronic survey form to a sample of 400 Egyptian university students who have accounts on social media sites. The study found a relationship between the following variables (intensity of exposure to social media content, motives for exposure to social media content, dependence on social media content, trust in social media, and interaction with social media content) for Egyptian university students in the study sample and their acquisition of critical thinking skills, while the demographic variables represented by (gender, type of university, academic year, and economic level) did not make a difference in the impact of social media sites on the acquisition of critical thinking skills by the respondents.
