Abstract

The study aimed to analyze the discourse of economic news headlines in the news application "Nabd", and monitor the Public mood of readers during the economic crisis. This was achieved through quantitative and qualitative analysis of readers' comments on economic news within the application. Additionally, the study examined the impact of headline discourse on the public mood, exploring the potential of news applications in monitoring audience sentiment based on mood management theory and discourse analysis, The findings of the study revealed a range of discourse strategies and social practices employed in economic headlines, reflecting the influence of ownership, orientations, and ideologies. Among the topics covered, the sugar crisis garnered the most attention from readers, followed by housing and real estate issues, and then the electricity crisis. The analysis of readers' comments indicated a prevalence of negative sentiment, followed by positive sentiment, and finally neutral sentiment. The most prominent emotions expressed in the comments were anger and frustration, while happiness was the least expressed emotion. Negative mood dominated the overall tone of the comments. The study also identified a relationship between the ownership patterns of news sources, their treatment of economic headlines, and the strategies employed in journalistic discourse. However, no significant relationship was found between the public mood and the treatment of economic headlines. On the other hand, a correlation was observed between the public mood and both the topic of the crisis and the audience's interest in the topic.
