The Relationship between Usage of Violent Content Presented on Digital Platforms and Bystander Effect

Abstract

The study aimed to investigate the relationship between the audience's use of violent content through digital platforms and the stimulation or regression of the "bystander effect". And revealing the public's motives for exposure to some of the most famous examples of violent content in Arab society. The study was applied to sample of viewers of violent content in the Arab world, from different age groups. The study sample consisted of 463 respondents, by applying an integrative theoretical model of the uses and effects of the "author", consisting of 4 components: the independent variable (usage), the intermediate variables, the expected effects, and then the explanatory theories of the occurrence of the effect. The results of the current study revealed a strong correlation between the respondents' use of platforms and digital media, with the emergence of the "bystander effect" and that watching violent content had a mediating effect that helps the emergence of the bystander effect with a group of other mediating variables. While violent content didn't record any significant effect in supporting the relationship between the use of digital platforms and help behavior in emergency situations.
