New media coverage of the role of the police in facing the repercussions of the Corona pandemic

The importance of this study highlights the focus on the police efforts in encountering the Corona pandemic as tackled by the new media, which included publishing the news and reports on the police procedures to implement the State resolutions such as curfew, home confinement and intensifying the security services on roads and public streets, in addition to combating the pandemic-related crimes such as the monopoly practices, commercial fraud, medical and preventive supplies, as the new media also paid attention to the social and humanitarian role of policemen in this field.
The study aimed to identify the most important security issues that received media attention and monitor media frameworks in their handling of the role of the police in facing the repercussions of the pandemic.
The researcher relied on the survey method using the quantitative content analysis tool for a sample of press websites, namely: Al-Ahram, Al-Youm Al-Sabea, Al-Wafd, and the official page of the Ministry of Interior on Facebook during 2020.
The results of the study revealed that there is diversity of journalistic editing arts in covering the police efforts to confront the repercussions of the pandemic, as it considerably relied on the news and accompanying images, and it also relied on leaders, the policemen and the Security Media Center at the Ministry of Interior as main sources for information, and it was concerned with publishing the procedures undertaken by the police force, which included several areas to address the repercussions of the pandemic.
The results also revealed that there is a clear discrepancy in the media frameworks used by each of the sample sites as well as the official page, as the legal frameworks in totality came in the first place, where it is a percentage that reflects focusing on the actions taken by the police in compliance with the law and resolutions issued by the State and applying them in a strict way to prevent the spread of the pandemic and facing its repercussions, while the security frameworks came in the second place, as it is a percentage that corresponds to the subject of the study, which essentially focuses on the media coverage of the police’s efforts in facing the repercussions of the pandemic through the procedures and activities the police force has undertaken.
