The Egyptian public's reliance on traditional and new media in times of the dust storm in Egypt, March 2020 is a model

Abstract


In the information era, mass media is considered one of the most important and interesting means of communication.
During situations of crisis, the role of mass media is very special in providing information and making people aware of the situation.
The aim of this study is to evaluate the role of both traditional and new media in informing people in crisis situation caused by the sand storm in March 2020 using survey method that was applied on the period of time from 15th March to 17th March on (536 participants).
The study concluded that television is the most traditional media that the public rely on in times of crisis. As for new media, people rely on social media as a major feature of new media in crisis. The study also revealed that the distinction of new media in the different stages of the crisis, which casts spotlight on the audience’s selectivity - sample of study - for the medium they trust to obtain information, especially in times of crisis.
