School Journalism and Its Relationship with Secondary Stage Students' Knowledge and Attitudes towards Official Initiatives

Abstract


The study problem is identified in the following question: What is the relationship of school journalism in developing knowledge and forming attitudes among secondary stage students towards official initiatives?
This study belongs to descriptive studies where the researcher used the sample survey method. The study was applied to a random sample of (400) students from secondary stage students. The sample was divided into (200) students for government schools and (200) students for private schools. The study reached to the following results:
- The study showed that the school journalism contributes in the respondents' knowledge of official initiatives with a large degree of 53.78% of the total items of the study sample, with a moderate degree of 31.10%, and a low degree by 15.12%.
- The results revealed that the positive attitude is the most common in the respondents' attitude towards official initiatives, as it reached at 84.59% of the total items of the study sample. This result can be explained in the light that school journalism is considered a cultural media that is effective in leadership and guidance in the school and contributes in forming the objective Critical thought and opinion making inside the school.
- The contributions of the schooling journalism in directing respondents to participate in activities and events related to official initiatives decreased, as the percentage of school newspaper reading influenced them to participate in activities and events related to official initiatives to a large extent out of the total items of the study sample 37.21%.
- The mean score was an average in the total score on statements that reflect the level of interest in school journalism in supporting official initiatives among students. This can be explained in the light that the current situation of school journalism at the secondary level is characterized by deficiencies in actual reality and it is below the desired level. The actual practice of schooling journalism activities are still at their minimum, level. This can be indicated that school journalism activity still needs to intensify its activities and effectiveness towards awareness of official initiatives among students.
